We are all sometimes confronted with the situation of having to work late to finish a project or work a little more in the coming weeks. However, these are unhealthy situations to find ourselves in. If you agree, you are sacrificing part of your private life. If you don’t agree, your boss won’t always be happy. These 7 tips will give you a better balance between work and private life.
1. Take a critical look at your priorities.
Start looking for things that are really important to you. Make a priority list of things you definitely want to do. By writing everything down, you automatically put these things on your priority list.
2. See if there are any areas where you are wasting your time.
Most people do things during the day that they shouldn’t really be doing. How about all those hours you sit on your phone unnoticed. Or that TV series you watch every day? Are there things you can leave out that have nothing to do with your list of priorities? Then delete them from your daily schedule.
Make sure you have as few disruptions as possible, so you can focus on the things that are really important and that you really need to have done that day.
3. Be aware that you don’t have to achieve a promotion right away.
It is not for everyone to focus purely on getting a promotion. HR managers see it more and more often, not everyone wants to focus on a promotion. There are extra responsibilities involved; an aspect that not everyone is waiting for.
If you’re not made for promotion or don’t want those extra responsibilities, just say so. There is nothing wrong with preferring to spend time with family and friends.
4. Spend time every day doing something useless.
This is very important because it allows us to recharge ourselves. Do something you don’t make immediate progress with, but simply enjoy. This will also improve your long-term performance.
5. Give your body sufficient attention.
A bad work-life balance can not only harm our mood or happiness, but can also be detrimental to your physical health. As a result, you often get an hour less sleep or less attention is paid to healthy eating. In the short term, this can work to your advantage, but in the long term it is certainly not advisable.
6. Keep your private time really private.
As long as you don’t have to be available outside of office hours, make sure you’re not. Just turn off your mail and your work phone. Make sure your private time is really private. After all, you should arrange your life the way you want, not the way your boss wants you to.
7. Learn to say no.
This is maybe the most important tip. Although there are always obligations you have to meet, saying ‘no’ is not a bad thing at all. You can decide for yourself what you want and what you don’t want, your boss doesn’t have to do this for you.
