At the beginning of 2014, entrepreneur, Joanna Doan, received funding for a serious magazine. She called it bpHope, in which her target group consisted of more than 6 million Americans with bipolar disorder. In an overconfident mood, she called Carrie Fisher, who, in addition to being a successful actress, writer and charismatic personality, also suffers from bipolar disorder.
Carrie felt honoured to be the first woman to give an interview in the new magazine. This gave the new magazine a boost when it came into appearance. Carrie’s sincerity ensured that many of the readers finally dared to show themselves outside again.
Encouragement for anyone with bipolar disorder
Carrie loved to encourage others to step over the shame. This was also one of her best qualities. In 2000, she suffered a psychotic attack, which she was ashamed of at the time. Now she can tell openly that she has a mental disorder.
Even during Star Wars events, she stayed longer than necessary to talk to fans. She didn’t shy away from answering questions about her bipolar disorder either.
Carrie wasn’t afraid to talk about her mental disorder in public. She realized that she had great influence on the general public, partly because of her role in Star Wars. Although this mental disorder is the same for men and women, women often receive a lot more negativity when they suffer from this disorder.
A mental disorder is an agony. Carrie once described her bipolar disorder as a party in her head, where she came in last and was allowed to clean up all the mess. Because women often have to change medication, a mental disorder is also more difficult for them to treat.
Because of the medication, she has gained a lot of weight, something she openly hates. However, she finds it worse that others ridicule her for this, even before they know that Carrie suffers from the disorder. She also wants to emphasize something else, if someone hasn’t suffered from the symptoms for a while, it doesn’t immediately mean that they are completely rid of them. The chance of a relapse is high! According to her, this should not be underestimated.
