There is, unfortunately, no question about it: The COVID-19 pandemic will have a massive, negative, and long-lasting impact on our entire society. At the moment, it has infected millions and killed hundreds of thousands. It has also wrought untold economic damage, costing tens of millions of people their jobs and damaging millions of businesses.
The long-term impacts don’t stop there: A new study says that the United States may experience as many as 75,000 additional suicides over the next decade as a result of COVID-19. This comes mainly due to the economic damage and turmoil that COVID-19 has brought and will continue to bring.
These are society-wide impacts. But, on an individual level, every one of us has the chance to try and allow COVID-19 to make us a better, happier person. It will be terrifying, and we may fail. But there are opportunities at this moment.
COVID-19 pandemic has forced us to reprioritize what is essential in our lives. For many of us – perhaps too many – our work was our life. We prioritize it often at the expense of our physical health, mental well-being, or the chance to spend time with our loved ones. There is no doubt that we need to work to make money to support ourselves and our loved ones, but perhaps some of us have lost ourselves to the stress and the grind of day-to-day business.
That moment has clearly changed.
Thanks to COVID-19, billions are in some sort of quarantine. Hundreds of millions throughout the world are unemployed, giving people more time on their hands than they ever previously had. As a result, more people are spending time with their family, time with their children, and doing things that they really enjoy.
That’s not to say that this lifestyle is sustainable. But it is to say that people can now find what they truly love, and potential reprioritize their lives when the pandemic ends.
The Chance to Pursue our Dreams
One of the biggest reasons that people don’t pursue a business or creative dreams is fear: Fear of losing their jobs or health insurance.
Well, for tens of millions of Americans, that moment has come.
With this many people unmoored from their financial tethers, nothing will hold them back. Indeed, in a crisis comes opportunity, and people will not be free to seize their dreams. Clearly, this probably isn’t the way they wanted to, and the economic pain for so many is so great. But there are entrepreneurs out there, right now, that are sitting in their rooms, coming up with the next huge business idea that can thrive in a post-Corona world.
This is their moment. Hopefully, it can be yours too.
Better Value Our Lives
The expression “You don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone” has never been so true. Many of us have found that so many things that we took for granted – seeing our parents, hugging our children, going to the mall – are now past us. We miss the things that we previously experienced more than we could have realized we would have.
One day – believe it or not – this moment will pass. The COVID-19 pandemic will end. And while things may never return to “normal,” we will be in a position where we can live or lives, go to work and hug our parents. We will be able to resume most of our activities.
When we do so, we will have a fundamental choice: Do we truly want to go back to the way that things were? Do we want to resume our lives and pick right back up where we left off? Or do we want to try a new life? One that is slower, that pays more attention to our loved ones and that understands just how precious each and every relationship is?
COVID-19 presents us with a chance to restore balance to our lives and make sure we only do what we truly want. It gives each and every one of us with a tremendous opportunity, one that we would all be better if we didn’t waste.
