David’s family’s 80 hectares of land were sold to a distant relative and just like that, the family’s property disappeared. What his family had built up over decades, had disappeared in a split second, due to a bank transfer.
Throughout his life, David dreamed of somehow regaining his family’s land and rebuilding the family business.
A few years after the great loss, the piece of land suddenly appeared at an auction. David and his father decided that, despite their modest means, they would do their utmost to regain ownership of the land.
David and his father spent many days and sleepless nights together to find a way to collect the extraordinary sum needed to reclaim the land. When the day of the auction finally arrived, their courage sank: almost 200 farmers had gathered. David and his father suspected that the chances of reclaiming their land was virtually nil.
But they did their very best. When the auctioneer announced their land, they immediately made a bid – and held their breath.

No one else had made a bid yet, and David and his father waited impatiently for the next person to overbid them. But suddenly it became dead quiet in the hall.
David didn’t understand what was happening and even the auctioneer was stunned. He made further attempts to provoke a new bid, but was only answered with silence. The stunned auctioneer had to take a break.
No less than three times, the company of farmers came together again and each time, no farmer made a bid.
In the end, the auctioneer had no choice, and after a stroke of the hammer, David and his family finally had their land back.
It felt like a miracle. A miracle created by 200 farmers from Nebraska, USA – every one of them knew it was the right decision.

David could finally begin a happy chapter in his family’s history.
“I have experienced deep humility in two days of my life. The first time was the day my son was born. The second time was that unforgettable day at the auction house,” David said.
